If the question is whether to tie a bunch of these giant weather balloons to a lawn chair, the answer is no. (They burst at about 82,000 feet anyway.) Besides, this is a true weather balloon, with plenty of fun, nonfatal uses. The cream-colored latex balloon is approx 40" dia when flaccid, you should pardon the expression, but has an 8-foot dia when inflated. The neck is 9" long x 1" dia. Scientists, meteorologists, inventors, teachers and the imaginative filmmaker are warned to launch the balloon carefully. The material is delicate and not made to survive brushes with pavement, pine branches, or clumsy physics students.

OK, this is not your Founding Fathers' quill pen, it's a pharmaceutical company's promo ballpoint but the name is in very small letters, and the white pen has a foot-long genuine fluffy white feather on the end. Fits into a brass-ish ball-socket that mounts via an adhesive pad on the surface of your choice. Adds a nice romantic, if not colonial, touch to any desk or counter, plus you get a half-dozen for real cheap.

An easy way to light up the kids' eyes! Teach them to wire a simple circuit with our basic components. The knife switch is mounted on a plastic base. The miniature plastic socket holds a standard flashlight bulb with a 14 mm dia screw base. We pack 6 volt and 3 volt round bulbs, or 1.5 volt bell-shaped bulbs, (5) to a package.(Bulbs are rated slightly higher to prevent them from burning out.) Or hook up the black plastic and metal 2" x 4-1/4" telegraph key with brass contacts and (2) terminal posts with nuts. Our blue-plastic holder for (1) "D" battery has a small tab at each end to hook a lead to, and a 1/8" square mounting hole at each corner. You add the mounting surface and the know-how. Actual bulb voltage listed in parenthesis.

Titled "The Field and Forest Handy Book," this volume has been justifiably in print since 1906. Written by Daniel C. "Uncle Dan" Beard, the founder of the Sons of Daniel Boone and one of the founders of the BSA, it's a compendium of eternally relevant woodland lore, from building cabins, sleds, boats, and bridges to camping in swamps. The only part we skipped was on how to cook a muskrat. (We know a place that delivers.) Loaded with illustrations. In soft cover from David Godine's Nonpareil Books, 428 pages.

It's over a foot wide and suitable for floor or wall mounting, but folds to 12-1/2" x 15" for storage. The reverse side includes (18) different games, activities, Q/A panels and a glossary. Designed for kids ages 4-10, but fun for the teachers and other adults in their lives.

It's a must-have for micro-warriors: Mini Weapons of Mass Destruction by John Austin (author of the best-selling Cubicle Warfare) is 241 pages of detailed instructions on building (42) implements of spitball warfare from ordinary household objects and office supplies. With the caveat that this is written for responsible, aware individuals who take reasonable safety precautions, we have to tell you that we particularly like the binder-clip crossbow. And the tongue-depressor catapult. And…
